Monday Reading

Romans 11-13.

I liked the AFL throwbacks in the Jets/Titans game, especially the refs. The Titans looked really good in their Houston Oilers colors, much better than their modern counterparts.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, the Seahawks looked ridiculous.

NFL Week 3 Picks

Hard to believe it's week 3 already. Last week, I changed my pick on the Atlanta-Jacksonville game, and, of course, paid for it with a loss. It wasn't the only pick I miss-fired on.

I finished last week a mediocre 8-8, leaving me 21-11 for the season. ESPN Experts here (I'm ahead of only Jaws and tied with Allen) and here (tied with Keyshawn and Carter). It's okay, the season is is still young, I'm only 4 games out of first.

So how could I have had such a bad week after such a good week 1? Easy. Just ask Geraldine.

"The devil made him do it."

The biggest surprises so far this season are San Francisco and Denver on the good side, and Tennessee, Carolina and Miami on the bad side.

Let's hope this week is better. My bank of excuses just got one poorer.

Washington.
Green Bay.
Minnesota.
New England.
Jets.
Philadelphia.
Giants.
Baltimore.
Houston.
New Orleans.
Chicago.
San Diego.
Pittsburgh.
Oakland.
Arizona.
Dallas- Monday.

Weekend Reading

Romans 5-10.

It's about time the Cardinals won the division. They've kind of limped along the past 3 weeks. Time now to rest guys and get ready. Playoffs start in about 10 days.

If we're to win in the post-season, we better not face any left-handers.

NFL Week 1 Picks

Last year I finished the regular season at 163-89-1. I missed picking a couple of games. I was able to beat out Wickersham, Schlereth, Allen, and Golic at the ESPN Expert Picks page.

This year, trouble looms. The Lions cannot be expected to lose all 16 again (can they?). The Patriots aren't going to win all 16 again like in 2007. So I'm going to have to think harder than ever. Which, when it comes to making predictions, is the last thing I think you want to do.

I always try to go with my gut instinct when I pick. I run the schedule that week, choose the team I immediately think will win, and move on. It's a process that has served me well for years. After I'm done, I'll go back and look at the list again for games that I think could go either way. I might change one pick a week after sitting and thinking about it for awhile.

So here we are. Should be fun again. Just remember- there's no laughing in football. No matter how bad I do this year.

Hey- I'm already 1-0 after Thursday. Anybody wagering whether I'll go 256-0 this year? I though not.

Here are the "ESPN Experts" picks. Not a whole lot of variety this week. The only contested game this week appears to be Philly-Carolina. Looks like we'll all have close to the same record. Kind of boring.

Dallas.
Philadelphia.
New Orleans.
Baltimore.
Houston.
Atlanta.
Cincinnati.
Minnesota.
Indianapolis.
Giants.
Seattle.
Arizona.
Green Bay.
New England.
San Diego.

Pickin' Time

Most of the veggies are done picked, so I'm naturally referring to football.

In my undying quest to humiliate myself and be held up to colossal national ridicule, I present my 2009 NFL season predictions.

The real fun in this won't come until the end of the year, when we see how the real results compare to my predictions. Although even I must admit I didn't do too bad last year.

I'll Undoubtedly Be Sorry For This

But I'm once again looking forward to a nationally televised game featuring Ohio State.

And, being Midwestern, I'll naturally root for them against USC.

And I'm sure I'll be disappointed once again.

I just hope it doesn't get ugly before 8 p.m. CDT.

Thursday Reading

John 17-21.

Recently The Lucy Show -Season 1 was released on DVD. Naturally our house had to have them. There have been a couple of DVDs released of selected shows from this series previously, but those were mostly of the final 3 seasons, when the format changed to Lucy in California working for Mr. Mooney.

The first 3 seasons are the seasons in Danfield, NY, with Vivian Vance as a regular, and are an absolute riot. I have never seen some of the episodes, and the ones I have I haven't seen in probably over 30 years. So it's like I've never seen them.

Plans are for the seasons to be gradually released, depending on response. So far they've proved very popular. I highly recommend them. MUCH better than anything else on now.

Tuesday And Wednesday Reading

John 9-12 Tuesday and 13-16 Wednesday.

I heard on the radio yesterday the Cardinals are 28-3 since the first of July in games started by Carpenter, Wainwright and Pineiro. Things have been going well lately.
