Weekend Reading

Hebrews 7-13.

Is it too soon to declare I don't like the 'game' "Too Soon?" on PTI? I would find it hard to believe Reali likes doing this segment.

NFL Week 7 Picks

I was not happy to be 8-6 last week but least I haven't had a losing week yet. I'm now 61-29 on the year.

I'm in the middle of the pack again, but only 3 games behind first place Mort, Carter and Jackson. ESPN Experts here and here.

Here are some props for the Denver unis. I have grown fond of them. I doubt we'll see them again this year, though. I like the road better than the home, there's less mustard.

There's a lot of good games today, unlike last weekend which had some real duds. This week I came really close to picking the Raiders, Falcons and Chiefs, but ultimately denied them. I hope I don't regret it.

Green Bay.
San Diego.
Indianapolis.
Pittsburgh.
New England.
Houston.
Carolina.
Jets.
Dallas.
Cincinnati.
New Orleans.
Giants.
Philadelphia- Monday.

Once Upon A Time

The Cardinals were managed by someone other than Tony LaRussa. It's been a long time. But his contract was done when the season ended.

Although this year's strategy proved very successful, certain things were ultimately left unfinished.

That must be what is driving this report. He doesn't want to leave the war he started in Spring Training.

Looks like the long time is going to be longer. Ultimately this is good news. Stability is a key organizational trait.

I'm Not Sure Which Is Scarier

Remember this?

Well this video may not be scarier, but look how close that plane comes to the car. How could you be driving that car and just keep on coming like there is nothing at all going on around you?

At first I thought it was a doctored video, but then I saw dozens of others just like it on YouTube.

Hat tip Colin Cowherd.

The AL Playoffs might get interesting after all. Let's see what happens in game 6.

NFL Week 6 Picks

I was happy to be 9-5 last week. A couple of games I could have won and a couple I could have lost, so I think it worked out well. I'm now 53-23 on the year. ESPN Experts here and here.

I love the AFL throwback uniform games so much, I wish they would continue this every year from this point forward.

I think the NFL has done a good job over the years trying to erase the memory of that league, trying to act like it never existed. As if those teams always have been a part of the NFL.

Now that is has been 50 years, I guess they decided it was okay to acknowledge it. The throwback games are great in this way. Even the refs look cool in their AFL duds.

SI has a nice pictorial of the teams in their old threads. I don't think one could argue that their modern designs are an improvement. Well, except maybe the Chiefs, whose uniforms are essentially unchanged and whose helmet design has improved, and the Broncos, what with the mustard yellow and all.

Don't miss Monday night's matchup for some good ol' AFL times. Oh, and it should be a good game as well.

Cincinnati.
Green Bay.
Minnesota.
Giants.
Pittsburgh.
Carolina.
Washington.
Jacksonville.
Arizona.
Philadelphia.
New England.
Jets.
Atlanta.
San Diego- Monday.

Wednesday Reading

Galatians 4-6.

I was shocked at the outcome of last night's season finale of Hell's Kitchen. I had Kevin as the favorite all along. I didn't think Dave had a chance with his arm casted, but the one-armed bandit prevailed.

Tuesday Reading

Galatians 1-3.

A week into the playoffs, and there is no one left to root for. I'll probably watch briefly here and there from this point on, but baseball is pretty well dead until February.

Monday Reading

2 Corinthians 11-13.

I've been zipping around surfing channels- did the playoffs start yet?

NFL Week 5 Picks

Last week was a good week, with a record of 12-2. I'm 44-18 for the year. ESPN Experts here and here. I'm moved up quite a bit, behind now only Mort and Schefter and Jackson.

I'm picking 6 road teams this week out of 14 games. That doesn't happen very often.

Buffalo.
Dallas.
Minnesota.
Giants.
Philadelphia.
Pittsburgh.
Carolina.
Baltimore.
San Francisco.
Seattle.
Arizona.
New England.
Indianapolis.
Jets- Monday.

Weekend Reading

2 Corinthians 7-10.

Friday Reading

2 Corinthians 5-6.

Oh well. Everyone knows if you're going to follow baseball, you're going to have to take the bad with the good. It's just the way it is. Almost all years end in disappointment. So even if this team doesn't come back, it's still been a fun year to follow.

Thursday Reading

2 Corinthians 3-4.

I would say something like, "don't worry Cardinals fans, it's just a flesh wound", but the good folks at Viva El Birdos already beat me to it.

Did I hear somewhere that Smoltz can close games?

As Col. Brubaker Once Said...

As long-time readers already know, one of my favorite films is Capricorn One.

After the plane runs out of gas and they ditch it in the desert, the three astronauts decide to split up.

As they step out of the plane, before they go their separate ways, we could have gotten a Knute Rockne speech from the leader of the trio, Col. Brubaker. But realizing the gravity of the situation, when he's done handing out weapons, he instead utters the immortal words, "there's not a lot of time and there's too much to say...so let's go"

That's how I feel tonight. I'd like to give an in-depth analysis of why the Cardinals won't win or why they can't lose. But the game is starting soon.

GO CARDS!

Wednesday Reading

2 Corinthians 1-2.

Must be a great week to live in Minnesota, the center of the sports universe the past few days.

How Appropriate

The Cubs will now be owned by a guy named Ricketts.

I hope everyone else sees the humor in this. Who else besides a guy named after a disease could own the Cubs?

I hear this guy's bid just beat out the great Scurvy and Kwashiokor families.

How very Cub of them.

Tuesday Reading

1 Corinthians 15-16.

Even though we made it to the post-season, which I'm very glad about, I'm still going to miss coming home at night and leisurely watching a ballgame. As we all know, there's no leisurely watching anything in the post-season.

And with us playing out on the west coast, my sleep deprivation will start immediately tomorrow night.

NFL Week 4 Picks

It's hard to believe, but the season hits the 1/4 mark this weekend.

Last week was a better week in the picks dept. My record was 11-5, so I'm 32-16 this year. ESPN Experts here and here. Still 4 games behind Mort, the leader of the pack.

This week has some monster games, which at this point in the season is saying something. Usually the can't miss games are in the second half of the season.

The early game is the Baltimore-New England match up. Hard to know which way to go here. A coin toss.

The late game is Jets-New Orleans. You have to love great defense vs. great offense games.

And then the mother of all games, the one every pundit has been talking about for the past couple of months, is Monday night. It's Favre...errrrrr, I mean...Minnesota vs. Green Bay.

Lots to keep us busy.

Chicago.
Cincinnati.
Indianapolis.
Giants.
New England.
Washington.
Tennessee.
Houston.
New Orleans.
Miami.
San Francisco.
Dallas.
Pittsburgh.
Minnesota- Monday.

Weekend Reading

1 Corinthians 7-12.

It's Been 50 Years

Last night marked the 50th anniversary of the premiere of "The Twilight Zone". The TV show, not the song. Although I love the song, too.

Occasionally I catch "Coast to Coast AM" on the radio in the early morning, and today they were kind of celebrating this anniversary. Too bad Art Bell wasn't hosting. But I digress.

This morning's guest was none other than Bill Mumy.

Yes, that Bill Mumy. While most remember him as Will Robinson, he will always be "Anthony" to me, the all powerful boy who, for all intents and purposes, was a terrorist to his small town on one of the Twilight Zone's most memorable episodes.

Mr. Mumy is now 55 years old and has his own website. Notice the Jack-in-the-Box-like picture, which had to be inspired by "It's A Good Life", the Twilight Zone episode that is seared in my memory.

He was actually on two other Twilight Zone episodes, which he recalled on "Coast to Coast." I've forgotten those.

I guess that makes me "a bad man- a very bad man."

Happy Birthday, Twilight Zone!

2009 Goals

As another month is officially in the books, and we're 3/4 of the way through the year, it's once again a good time to check our progress for the year.

September was once again light on posting, putting me even further behind. But I'm still not giving up yet. As of September 30th, I've made 283 posts this year. To be on pace for 450, I should have made 337. That means I must make up 54 posts over 3 months, meaning I'll have to average 56 posts a month from here on. Doable but extremely difficult.

But I do know something you don't- a plan to bring me back into contention. It's going to get interesting down the wire. I'll see if I can pull it off.

My reading is still way ahead of schedule. We even took a week off in September. If all goes well we should finish before December. I'm ready for the ESV next year.

I'm a little ahead of schedule with exercise goals. I'm at 19,190 push ups and 19,275 squats. I should be at 18,750 for both. At my present pace and at my present rate it will take me around 74 days more to reach my goal, or around December 16th.

On the landscape front, I have one tree to cut down and two shrubs to remove in October.

I obviously need to get going on posting. I've got two ideas up my sleeve. I haven't given up yet.

D.V. I'll make it.

Another new game on PTI was introduced Thursday. Too Soon? was a good concept, but the execution was a little cheesy, especially the Reali close ups.
