Even though I hate the Cardinals with every fiber of my being (I'm a Cub fan and native of southern Illinois), the Cardinals are a part of who I am as a human being.

Everyone in my family, save one of my brothers who also is a Cub fan, are Cardinal fans. I grew up listening to Jack Buck and Mike Shannon on KMOX. I grew up listening to Jay Randolph and Ron Jacober on Channel 5 sports reporting about another Cardinal victory and another demoralizing Cub defeat...they never failed to mention a Cub loss but passed over a Cub victory.

You can't pick up WGN all that well where I grew up. I'm a bit farther north of my hometown so I can hear Pat Hughes and Ron Santo live and die with the Cubs. WGN-TV has all but given up on the Cubs, but I'm glad DirecTV gives us Comcast Sports Net so I can watch the Cubs leave the bases loaded three times in every game.

Following the Cardinals is a necessary evil because 95% of my congregation are dyed in the wool Cardinal fans. There are a smattering of Cub fans, too. Your blog helps keep me up to date on the team I love to hate. Shucks, I even rooted for the Red Sox in the 2004 World Series. Their victory celebration at the Concrete Bowl Formerly Known as Busch Stadium was the highlight of the 2004 baseball season and a personal highlight of my life.

Thanks for keeping us posted on the new stadium and the team. The Cardinals have a ballpark to be proud of, that's for certain.

Assuredly, a greater blessing one could not have. But I also count as a blessing growing up listening to Jack Brickhouse and Lou Boudreau, thanks to my Cub fan older brother. They were always fun, especially because they'd wail at the Cubs' misfortunes. Things changed when Harry Caray came to town. The Cubs became more of a commercial entity, I believe.

"Even though I hate the Cardinals with every fiber of my being (I'm a Cub fan and native of southern Illinois), the Cardinals are a part of who I am as a human being."

If you substitute the word Cubs with the word Cardinals, and vice versa, I could make the same statement. In fact, maybe you are my brother and I don't realize it.

"Thanks for keeping us posted on the new stadium and the team. The Cardinals have a ballpark to be proud of, that's for certain."

I am stunned at the job they have done. It has turned out more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. Only problem is it may take me years to get a ticket the way they've been selling out.
