I think this comic routine is fairly old. I'm pretty sure I saw it on I Love Lucy maybe, although the premise I'm sure is from much earlier.
I know I saw a variation of it on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
But this one, I think, is the best, due entirely to Carroll O'Connor.
